Pillar 1 of Building an online home business: Personal Development and Leadership Development

Many people think that they can come into their home business and jump right to the top overnight. I wish I could tell you that was the case, but when it comes to building your home business online or anywhere for that matter you will probably need to learn some skills and develop as a leader.

Your business will only grow to the point that you do. When you neglect working on yourself and developing yourself as a leader, your business will suffer.

Pillar 2 of Building a Home Business Online: Personally Branding Yourself and Expanding Your Target Market Connections

When many people start in their business they spam their links and business all over and this does little to bring in leads or sales and in most cases ends up pushing people away from you rather than attracting them to you.

Ideally you should be branding you for several reasons. One reason is that your business might not be around forever. Obviously you want your business to be around long term, but sometimes that can be out of your control.

If you only brand your network marketing business and something should happen where that company goes out of business or you decide to do something else, all your time you spend trying to brand that business instead of you will have been wasted.

In addition to that people want to do business with leaders and people, not just a specific business. When you brand you and become the leader others are looking for you start to attract people to you.

The second part of building your home business online in pillar two is expanding your connections with your target market. Establish who is your target market and then go out and start making connections with those people.

For example if you market weight loss and nutrition, start connecting with people who are interested in healthy living. If you are looking for new quality business partners, start connecting with people who are into marketing, business, personal development, leadership, among other things.

The larger your network becomes in your target market the more likely it will be that you end up connecting with someone who wants to do business with you.

Pillar 3 of Building your online business: Monetization Strategy

You are going to need to have an effective way to monetize your marketing online as well. Many people join their businesses and start putting out content without any real plan to monetize it.

You need to have a strategy for monetizing your online business through your content. If you put out a lot of content that’s good, but if there isn’t a process for those people to join your team or buy from you, you won’t make any money.

Begin with the end in mind. What is your end goal that you want to happen? People to join your team? Get your products? When you know your end goal, you can create content that leads people into that end goal.

Monetizing your business correctly can is an essential step of building a home business online.

Pillar 4 of Marketing your home business online: Content Marketing

Content is king when it comes to marketing your home business online. This is where you want to provide value to your target market.

You should be focused on solving your target market’s number one questions and problems. When your content marketing is centered around this it will start to attract people to you.

As Zig Ziglar said, “When you help people get what they want, you will get everything you want.” Leading with value for your target market will do just that.

Instead of just talking about how amazing your company and products are while marketing your business online, rather you should be solving problems and questions your target market has and then lead into your business, or products as the ultimate solution.

This will pull people to you, rather than push them away with overly aggressive marketing tactics.

Pillar 5 of Building your home business online: Follow up and Engagement

The 5th pillar of building your home business online is having an effective follow up and engagement strategy. All to often people in the home business industry become beggars rather than leaders when it comes to follow up.

As they say, “The fortune is in the follow up.” However, there certainly is a right way and a wrong way to properly follow up.

You shouldn’t be hounding your potential customers or business partners to buy from you or do business with you everyday. Nothing is more annoying when someone is reaching out to you constantly and you know the only reason is to get you to buy from them.

A much more effective way of marketing your home business online is to add people to your list and then consistently send them value based content.

When you do this it actually builds a relationship with your potential customers and then when timing is right they reach out to you, rather than you having to try and always hunt them down.

Pillar 6 of building a successful online business: Traffic

Now this is where a lot of home business owners get overly focused on and become obsessed with getting more traffic. Traffic is definitely an essential part of building a successful business online, but it isn’t the first step you should be focused on.

Many people make the mistake of having this be the first step they focus on and spend a ton of money on ads or things to get traffic, but they don’t have the other pillars in place first and they end up just wasting their money.

Without the other pillars in place first what you are driving traffic to, won’t convert and you are going to just end up throwing your money away. There are all kinds of effective ways to get traffic for your business, but look at it more as a way to scale it, and build your audience faster once you have the other pillars in place for your business.

Consistency is key for an effective Daily Method of Operation in your home business

Your daily habits will make you or break you, and focusing on the right things will either grow your business or keep you broke. Having the right daily method of operation starts with consistency.

You will not build a massive business overnight. I wish I could tell you that would be possible, but it’s just not.

If you are looking for overnight riches go buy a lottery ticket, but even that probably is just wasting your time and money.

Make working on your mindset and leadership development a part of your daily method of operation for building your home business

Your business will only grow to the point that you do and if you aren’t consistently working on yourself you will continually hit plateaus in your business.

Everyone comes from a different starting point when they start their home business. Some people have developed themselves considerably, while others haven’t done anything like that before.

This is why you see some people shoot to the top right away in their business while others seem to struggle. It’s not that some people are special or more talented or that they have something you don’t, it’s more that you haven’t yet developed into the person you need to become to succeed at that high level.

You don’t magically become a top earner in your company and business, rather, you BECOME a top earner in your business. You need to develop into the leader other leaders are looking for, and making personal development a crucial part of your daily method of operation is essential.

Find out who your ideal target market is before you set up your daily method of operation for your home business

Most businesses you are in will have pretty much the same daily method of operation you should focus on, the main thing that changes is the target market you are reaching out to.

If you haven’t determined your target market that should be the first thing you figure out. A lot of people struggle with building their home business because they are trying to market to everyone, rather than their specific ideal target market.

When you market to everyone, you are really marketing to no one. For example if you are in real estate your target market might be first time home buyers, or if your marketing nutrition and weight loss, your target market might be people interested in health and fitness.

Once you have determined your target market you want to focus on content that helps them as well as connecting and building relationships with this target market.

Find out what your top income producing activities are and then focus on them as a part of your daily method of operation for building your home business

Now that you know your ideal target market and are consistently working on leadership development, the next step is focusing on the daily habits that bring in results. Your top income producing activities should be focused around 3 main areas.

The 3 foundation areas for creating results in your business is going to be building your audience, engaging your audience and then selling to your audience. If what you are doing falls into any of these categories it’s probably worth doing, but if it doesn’t you may want to rethink how you are spending your time.

Building your audience could be as simple as connecting with 10 new people in your target market a day. There are plenty of options to do that through social media, you just need to know where they hang out.

For example if you are looking for leaders try looking in personal development groups or on other leaders pages that talk about personal growth and development. A few examples might be people like Tony Robbins, Brian Tracy, John C. Maxwell, or Jim Rohn to name a few.

When you make building your audience a priority in your daily method of operation you will never run out of highly targeted people to talk to about your business.

How to make engaging your audience a part of your daily method of operation in your home business

Now one thing people can fall into the trap of is doing non-income producing activities during times when they should be focused on income producing activities. For example during the day or after you are done with work is a good time to focus on connecting with people and presenting your business.

Unfortunately, some people hear the part about leadership development and then all the do all day long is read books or watch training videos. There is certainly a time and a place for that, and you should be doing it every day, but it needs to be done during off times when you can’t be building your audience and selling to your audience.

This is where engaging your audience comes into play. You should be consistently creating new value based content that your target market will benefit from. That could be videos, blog posts, live videos, webinars, emails, among other things.

The key is to do it consistently, whatever that means for you. Ideally you should be doing this daily, however if you find you are spending all of your time making content, but never building your audience and selling to your audience you won’t make any money.

Having a balance of all three factors is what really matters and if your goal is to grow your business really fast, you should spend most of your time building your audience and connecting with them and then selling to them.

Active prospecting should be your #1 focus in your daily method of operation while building your business…if you want to get results fast

There is two aspects of building your business online and that is active prospecting and passive marketing. Active prospecting is you reaching out to people yourself, while passive marketing is attracting people to you through your content alone.

Both are things that you should be doing in your business and part of your daily method of operation, but if you are new and want fast results, you should focus more on active prospecting than passive marketing.

Passive marketing is great as your content you created to engage your audience will continue to work for you forever once you put it out there, but it does take time to add up and start working.

Sure you might get some results by posting a video for the first time and get a lead or two, but you shouldn’t be posting your content and then just waiting around to bring in results.

You still want to hustle and work hard by actively prospecting while your passive marketing is working for you in the background. Starting out you will get more results faster with active prospecting, but there will come a time when you have more and more content out there and have build your audience large enough that it will flip.

From then on you still want to be actively prospecting, but you will get a lot of results just from your passive marketing. Think of it like planting a crop vs going hunting.

You want to plan for the long term and you might start growing corn, but if you wait until the corn is fully gown to eat you would end up starving to death. However, if you go hunting you’ll have food to eat right away, but it only lasts so long and you have to actively go out and get it.

When you are new and hungry I would recommend “hunting” a.k.a. actively prospecting and then be “growing corn” creating content so it can be growing while you are sleeping hunting. Then down the road you’ll have results coming in from both passive and active marketing.

Again focusing on the right daily habits, income producing activities, and having an effective daily method of operation will really help you get results in your business.

A question I get from time to time is how to get someone who is skeptical to join your business or buy from you, and this post I cover some tips surrounding that question.

How to get someone who is negative to join your business and buy from you…You Don’t!

Here’s the thing, a lot of people want some magic formula to convince someone who isn’t interested or that is skeptical or negative to buy from them and that’s just the complete wrong mindset to begin with.

Your job isn’t to convince someone who is negative or skeptical to join your business it’s to find people who are interested and open to your business and then share it with those people and help them get started.

A major place people end up struggling in their business is that they spend too much time talking to the wrong people. You don’t want to be focused on negative or skeptical people and making them become interested, your time is far better spent trying to reach someone who is interested and a good fit for your business.

A few examples of how to get someone who is skeptical to join your business is just wasting your time

Think of trying to get someone negative or skeptical about joining your business like trying to get a vegetarian to become a meat eater.

Let’s say you sold meat and you wanted to increase your sales and build a profitable meat business. Would your target market ever be vegetarians? You would certainly hope not.

Asking how to get someone who is skeptical or negative to join your business or buy from you is like asking how can you get vegetarians to want to buy meat from you?

You’re almost guaranteed to 100% waste your time, and if you did finally manage to convince a vegetarian to buy from you or join your meat sales team, they would probably quit soon after, or never be successful.

This is because if you convinced them to join you would have to convince them to promote it, and most likely someone who doesn’t believe in what you promote and represent will have an incredibly difficult time promoting and selling it to others.

Getting a NO is a normal part of building a successful business, and you have to accept that if you are ever going to be successful

Of course you want everyone to buy from you and it would be nice if you could some how find a way to do that, but in reality that’s just not how things work. I don’t care how amazing your business, products, services, or compensation plan is, you will never sign up 100% of the people you talk to.

Getting a no is just a part of getting to that next yes, and if you can’t accept that, you probably shouldn’t be in business to begin with. At the same time you should be focused on getting more yeses from the people you talk to, and a large factor in that is going to be talking to people who are actually open and interested in what you have.

Trying to convince and sell people on your business that have no interest in it what so ever will only leave you frustrated and hinder your results. You are much better off finding out if people are open first and then moving forward in your sales process from there.

Certainly don’t pre-judge people, but by all means pre-sort them. When it comes to prospecting and recruiting you are looking for people that are looking for you and qualifying your potential customers will save you a lot of headaches in the long run.

The only way to convince someone who is negative or skeptical

So there’s one possible way to get someone to potentially change their mind about what you do, but it definitely isn’t some magic one-liner that is going to change their attitude. The only way I’ve ever found someone to change their tune is when you go out and create massive success without them.

That’s right, you don’t convince them to join, buy, or get started, you go out and do it without them. You move on and keep building your business and once they start seeing you succeed some, and I emphasize some, may come back around and join you.

Even this isn’t a sure fire strategy, but this is the only one that will save you time, energy, frustration, and that keeps you on track to succeed in your business.

Stop looking to convince the haters, and go out and create so much success that they want to join you.

A lot of people tend to struggle with building their online business on social media, and the main reason is that they are so focused on selling, rather than providing value and branding themselves.

People do business with those that they know like and trust, and by branding you, you can develop that in your online business

Almost every business you join will talk about approaching your friends, family, and acquaintances about your business and products, but they rarely explain why. The reason is that for most people you already have that know, like, and trust factor built in with those people.

Unfortunately, many online businesses won’t teach you how to build a successful business outside of that.

It definitely is a great place to start, but you shouldn’t have to determine your success based on if your friends and family start in your business or not.

In addition to that, many people mistakenly think that once they get outside of their friends and family that they can just go into pitch mode and people will automatically buy. This is not the case.

When you are only focused on how can I sell them, and only see people as a dollar sign it you’ll have a long road ahead of you and won’t make much money.

People love to buy, but they hate to be sold. Have you ever bought something from someone just because you liked the salesperson? I guarantee you have, it could have been getting desert from a waiter/waitress you liked, tipped more, added an extra service, got the extended warranty, bought additional accessories you weren’t planning to, among other things.

This is what you want to have happen in your online business as well, and branding you is the first step.

The benefits of branding you while building your home business

You know your company has great products, service, compensation plan, and more, but why should someone work with you vs joining with someone else?  Now when you are talking to people you know about your business it makes sense that they would join with you, because they are your friends, but what about people you don’t know?

What is going to separate you from everyone else promoting the same business you do? This is why branding you, is important. People want to join and work with leaders and when you provide value and content in the market place it will start to establish you as such.

Most people only brand their company or network marketing business rather than themselves. There are a few downsides to this.

One is that in many cases you just come off as a spammer. When all you do is talk about how great xyz products are people start to tune you out.

The key is to provide value for your target markets problems and not to just spam before and after pictures and links to join your business. When you lead with value first, it will position you as an expert in your field as well as, building trust with your audience.

When you solve your target markets problems they will line up for days to hear from you. There are a few different kinds of ways to provide value to your audience. You can educate, instruct, or inspire.

All three methods are effective and by doing a variety in the content you produce you can attract different kinds of people and personality types from your target market.

What happens when you use attraction marketing effectively to build your online business?

There are a lot of benefits to online marketing with attraction marketing and when you learn how to do attraction marketing correctly it can bring on dramatic results in your business.

When you use attraction marketing it will help you build relationships faster and establish trust and credibility with your audience. People tend to do business with those that they know like and trust.

This is why many online businesses and network marketing businesses teach you to start with people that you know, aka friends and family. This is also why many people struggle with building online because they don’t know how to use attraction marketing and end up being in pitch mode and turn off their potential customers.

Do you have an online business in network marketing? You could talk about things like generating leads, making more money, leadership development, team building, sales skills, prospecting tips, and a whole lot of other things to get quality people following your stuff.

The best way of how to use attraction marketing is to focus on leading with value. When you give people value and focus on what they want, they will end up giving you what you want. That could be in the form of leads, sales, recruits, clients, and more.

No one likes to be sold, but everyone loves to buy

Another reason people struggle with building an online business is that they are focused on being in pitch mode and all they think about is sales, rather than leading with value. Stop thinking about how can you sell them and start thinking how can I help them.

When you focus on selling someone and convincing them how great and amazing your products are, rather than finding what their needs and wants are and providing solutions to those needs and wants, you push people away vs attracting them to you.

You don’t need to be making millions of dollars or be a guru to start using attraction marketing for building your business online. You just need to focus on leading with value and solving problems and your perfect target market will start coming to you.
