Words You Must Avoid While Prospecting In Network Marketing

Prospecting in network marketing is one of the first skills you need to master. Unfortunately, it’s hard not to say too much when you are new and prospecting in MLM. Most often there are several words you are saying that prevents people from ever starting in your business. These are words you should avoid that just throw up red flags in your prospect’s mind for no reason. In this post, you’ll learn the tops words to avoid while prospecting in network marketing.

Inviting properly is the foundation of prospecting in network marketing and recruiting successfully

The person who does the best at network marketing and MLM prospecting is the one who shows the most people. Unfortunately, most people suck at prospecting in MLM and say all the wrong things.

If you can’t get people to actually see the presentation and the information, there’s no way they will ever join your business. To be successful in network marketing you need to utilize the law of averages. This basically means showing a lot of people and then the numbers work themselves out.

Unfortunately, most people say the wrong things and push people away while prospecting in network marketing. What you want to do is share your network marketing business with people in a way that has them see it with an open mind.

However, with a few misplaced words and phrases that most network marketers use, your prospect will close off and either blow you off or not really listen to your presentation. In the rest of this post, you’ll learn some of the keywords to avoid while prospecting in MLM.

A few words to avoid while prospecting in MLM has to do with inviting to a team event

After a hard day of work do you want to sit through another boring meeting? How about getting roped into another business presentation for a client? The answer is probably “NO” right?

Well, unfortunately, most new network marketers use the terms “meeting” and “business presentation” all the time. When you are prospecting in network marketing these are two terms you really should avoid at all costs.

Even though the reality is you are inviting one of your friends or a prospect to a business presentation you shouldn’t say it in those exact words. The reason is that it throws up red flags in the subconscious.

For example, saying it’s a business presentation or a meeting will immediately turn people off. Most people hate going to meetings or presentations at their jobs, so why would they want to go to one after work?  The answer is they don’t and calling it that will drive people away instead of attracting them in.

Words to substitute for business presentation or meeting while prospecting in Network Marketing

A great word to substitute “meeting” or “business opportunity” is “event”. Most people love to go to events because they are usually fun and you get to meet new people.

When you say an event or team event it doesn’t automatically throw up red flags. Another option instead of “business presentation” or “meeting” is to talk about and edify the people who will be at the presentation.

People love to meet new people that they would get along with. Instead of talking about a “meeting” and trying to describe your network marketing business in advance, describe a person. Doing this will make prospecting in network marketing much easier.

Instead of having to try and convince someone to show up to a presentation, you just have to invite them to meet a person. When you edify a person in your team and promote meeting them, you will get better results.

Think of prospecting in MLM like getting people to meet a celebrity or attend a concert. Most people will drive miles to meet a person, but they won’t drive five minutes to go to a meeting.

Focus on edification and inviting to meet the leaders in your organization and you’ll get more people to show up while prospecting in MLM.

How to invite to your network marketing presentation with edification

So you’re probably wondering at this point how do you actually invite someone to see your business presentation, without saying “business presentation.” It’s a lot easier than you think when you use edification and inviting people to events.

Here’s one example you can use while prospecting in MLM. “Hey Sally, I’ve been working on a new project with a few friends and there’s this lady, Julie I really want you to meet. We’ve become good friends and I think you two would really get along. She’s a mom like you and is just one of the most genuine and down to earth people I know. Plus she has this amazing lifestyle where she gets to travel all the time and is able to raise her kids full time. We are all getting together tonight and I’d love to introduce you! We are meeting at Tom’s pub downtown, and I’ll pick you up so you can meet her and see what we’ve been working on.”

Couple of things to pay attention to in that invite. You used edification, you didn’t say business presentation, and you said you were going to pick her up. When you pick people up, they show up.

Too many times new network marketers tell their friends to meet them somewhere random, and they wonder why their friends don’t show up. Most people don’t jump out of moving vehicles, so if you pick them up they’ll show up.

Plus they will feel comfortable and it won’t be them walking into a crowded room of people where they don’t know anyone. When people are comfortable they are more likely to stay open to hearing about your business when they are uncomfortable they likely won’t join your business.

Another common mistake people make while prospecting in MLM is talking about income opportunities, or multiple streams of income, or other “business opportunity” like words

Ever heard the phrase “it sounds too good to be true?” Well, when you use specific phrases while recruiting in network marketing you’ll end up giving off that “too good to be true” vibe.

When you say things like come check out this ground floor, massive, unheard of, change the money-making opportunity, you come off as spammy and full of hype. This immediately makes people think it’s too good to be true or it’s some kind of scam.

Regardless of how true any of these things may be, with most people it triggers their “B.S. Meter” and throws up red flags and resistance to checking out what you do.

A great way to prospect in network marketing without having to use hype words and making it sound too good to be true is by seeing if people are open. You can do this with the words, “if I, would you?”

I learned this first from Eric Worre in his book Go Pro and it is a highly effective method for prospecting in MLM. Basically you say something like, “If I could show you a way to do (Insert a prospect’s problem, need, goal, or desire), would you be open to checking it out?”

It’s so simple, yet works so well! The reason it works is that you are interested in your prospect and their problems and helping them, not just trying to sell your business.

When you are prospecting in MLM it’s much better to use words that don’t raise resistance

A few words that don’t immediately raise resistance are things like project, idea, concept, etc. For example, you may invite someone to see your business like this. “Hey Joe, I’m working on a project right now and it may or may not be anything you would be into, but I’d really appreciate it if I could get about 30 minutes of your time to run it by you and get your opinion on it.”

Another option could be like, “Hey Tom, I’m super slammed at work right now, but what do you have going on tomorrow at 3? (If they say nothing going on) say, “Listen, now’s not really the time to get into it since I’m stuck at work, but let’s grab coffee at XYZ I have an idea I want to run by you and we can talk more then.”

If the person has a good relationship with you, they will almost always meet up with you. Again the main thing you want to do when prospecting in MLM is get the person in front of the presentation so they can see it for what it really is. Not trying to convince them to join before they actually see it.

Asking for someone’s opinion or asking to run an idea by them are great ways to prospect in network marketing without being weird. This is also a great way to prospect in network marketing without having to explain everything before the presentation.

Set up a network marketing sales funnel to pre-qualify your leads

When you follow the above steps you’ll certainly start to get some presentations with people about your network marketing business. At the same time, wouldn’t it be nice to just have leads come to you that were actually interested in what you had?

Well, thankfully that is possible when you use network marketing sales funnels. It’s not an overnight process but when you combine a sales funnel system with content marketing you can start to attract network marketing leads to you.

The basic idea is that you offer some kind of lead magnet people actually want and that is congruent with your network marketing business. For example, if you promoted a health and wellness business, you could offer a healthy meal plan guide. Then you would sell your nutrition products on the back end.

If you were focused on leads for business builders you could offer guides on social media growth and engagement, or sales and leadership skills. Then like with your products, you would sell your business opportunity on the backend.

This is certainly just the basics of using a sales funnel to generate leads, but if you’re serious about getting leads for your network marketing business online check out this free training.

How to avoid prospecting in network marketing and grow your business on autopilot

If you’re anything like me, you know prospecting in MLM works, but you don’t want to have to do it forever. The reality is, there are two sides to building a network marketing business online. They are active prospecting and passive marketing.

Most people hear about marketing their network marketing business with content marketing and they think it is super easy. The reality is it is simple, but not easy. It takes time and consistency to really grow your network marketing business with passive marketing.

Ideally, to get the best results, in the beginning, you’ll want to combine both active prospecting and passive marketing. That way you can get new signups in your business quickly and build a content marketing system that will eventually start to make sales on autopilot.
