How Do You Start a Non Profit?
When it comes to business, it isn’t all about cold hard cash and making your first million. Sometimes it goes a little bit deeper than that, sometimes it is about making an impact, about a higher purpose, it is about doing some good. With this in mind, you may be asking yourself how to start a nonprofit organization and would that make sense for your business goals?
A nonprofit isn’t everyone’s idea of fun, they can be a lot of hard work and sometimes have very little in the way of financial pay off for the owner. That doesn’t mean that they aren’t a worthy cause, or that it isn’t the perfect match for a business to start depending on your financial goals.
.
If you have been looking for a way to make an impact, to do some good, then in this post you’ll learn some tips on how to start a nonprofit business.
How Do You Start a Non Profit?
Research. It is the foundation of any business, but you’re going to need to dig a little bit deeper with a nonprofit. Check out if there are organizations already tackling the same issues, or at least very similar work. If you are just duplicating services that are already around, support is going to be a lot lower for yours. Do a deep dive into your chosen demographic, is there a need for your proposed company or are you projecting?
Be prepared to wait, and wait. You will be waiting for funding and grant application times to open, you will be waiting for people to make the donations they promised, you will be waiting for a lot. In all of the moments of waiting, be proactive, get yourself a dedicated IT for non-profit like Houk Consulting. Get your social media accounts and website ready, and start reaching out to people in the local area. Networking is vital to get you off on the right foot.
How to start a nonprofit organization begins with your mission statement
Write up a missions statement. What is your purpose? Who is it you are going to serve and how will you serve them? Every decision, every action plan and indeed every action you make will need to be in support of this mission statement.
Alongside a mission statement, write a business plan and develop your marketing plan. Just because your main goal isn’t getting money in your back pocket, it doesn’t mean that you don’t need to show that you are a viable business.
Not profit organizations need a board of operations to oversee the business
The decision makers are going to be a governing body, they will carry out a whole host of responsibilities. When you are getting a board together, look for people with a strong vested interest in the area you intend to operate, and that they bring a selection of others skills. To ensure long-term success you’re going to need to utilize this board often – make it count.
Now you have all that sorted. It’s time to get it all legal. You might be tempted to skip incorporation, but don’t. Having a formal structure will give you more credibility for a start, and on from that, it limits the liability of the directors and officers. Some funders and grant will also prefer to have official documents to show where their money is going.
Whatever you choose to do be a traditional business, home business, or nonprofit business plan, have fun and pick one that is congruent with your goals!
