Popular Misconceptions About The Cloud
Most people see the cloud as something that is “out there” in the ether, run by tech megacorporations like Amazon and Google. But the truth be told, the cloud is actually a lot simpler and down-to-Earth.
At root, the cloud is an experience: a new kind of IT service that provides unique benefits, such as only paying for what you use, and getting rid of the need to hire a CIO and supporting staff.
But with that said, there are many misconceptions about the public and managed private cloud. Here are just a few.
Public Clouds Make Private Clouds Obsolete
There’s a common perception out there that the growth in the utility of public clouds means that the days of the private cloud are over. But that’s just not the case.
For starters, many of the innovations happening on the public cloud are readily transferable onto the private cloud. New apps and network models can be applied at both the large and small scale.
And secondly, despite the growth in services on the public cloud, very few of them are used. Data from Forbes suggests that the top five apps make up more than 85 per cent of Amazon’s cloud revenue.
Public Clouds Are More Suitable For Today’s Data Needs
Public clouds have come a long way in the last five years, providing functionality that many small businesses never dreamed was possible. But there’s a misconception out there that public clouds are the place to go for enterprise workloads, and that private clouds are far behind the times.
But is that true? It turns out that what companies really need is flexibility when applying workloads. They need solutions that will scale appropriately and deliver them the results that they want. The private cloud tends to provide this better than the public cloud because it allows for a high level of company control.
Most of the big players in the market see this, and it’s why Microsoft has been explicit that it wants to get into the private cloud market.
The Cloud Is “Out There Somewhere”
The cloud isn’t something that it “out there” somewhere. And while it’s true that some public clouds render services remotely, it doesn’t have to be the case.
The cloud is merely a term that refers to the user’s experience of their computing environment. Clouds occur whenever a user can access a service from any device, rather than having to go to a specific terminal.
It also happens when they can get support for their needs from somebody outside of their organisation.
Hybrid Clouds Are All The Same
The final misconception is that hybrid clouds are all the same. It turns out that there are three main types of hybrid clouds. The first type is the simplest, where cloud features can be transferred from one public cloud to one private cloud and back again.
The second is from one private cloud to many public clouds, such as porting VMWare to both Amazon and Microsoft servers. The final type is hybrids where you can transfer functionality between many public and private clouds.
