Are You Getting Caught Up In The Shiny Object Syndrome?

Unfortunately all too often when most people are faced with lack luster results, instead of looking in the mirror and taking personal responsibility, they get caught up in the shiny object syndrome and start looking for the next quick fix.

Are You Getting Caught Up In The Shiny Object Syndrome-

Go through the action steps first before getting sucked into the shiny object syndrome

Too many times I see people struggling in their businesses and instead of looking in the mirror and taking responsibility for their results they instead look for the next greatest thing to magically get immediate results.

Everything has a learning curve and all too often people don’t take the time to develop their skill sets before they try and get on board with the next shiny object they see.

For example almost every home business out there talks about approaching your warm market (people that you know first). I whole heartily agree with this in that everyone should approach their warm market about their business if they believe in it, and have good products.

However, the only thing is, that you shouldn’t completely rely on that to become successful. A lot of people out there are able to become successful with their warm market alone, however a lot of people such as myself weren’t able to through that strategy alone.

At the same time, a lot of people I’ve brought in to the business through cold market and lead generation strategies have been successful with their warm market.

Not that either strategy is right or wrong, each have their advantages and disadvantages, but I find a lot of people don’t even give a specific strategy a chance before they attempt something else. They then blame the company or the products, or the comp plan, instead of blaming their work ethic and then get sucked into the shiny object syndrome.

Apply the rule of 10 times and go through the numbers

Start with your warm market and start going through the numbers, but apply the rule of 10 times before you start to re-evaluate what you are doing. Now a lot of people never go through the number necessary to win to begin with, and that’s why they aren’t succeeding.

However you should be applying the rule of 10 times along side of the numbers to make sure you are on track. This means that if you do something 10 times and don’t get the expected outcome reach out to your mentors or coach for guidance.

Let’s say your company had an option to get your products for free and let’s say that requires you to get 5 customers to make that happen. Well if you only showed 2 people your business the correct way, you really shouldn’t be upset that you haven’t gotten 5 to start. You’ll probably need to share your business with 20 or more correctly to get those 5 to start.

However let’s say you “showed” 10 people your business and no one got started. The reason I put showed in quotes is that you probably were doing something wrong to get that result. It’s not the end of the world, but at this point you should apply the rule of 10 time and reach out for help to see what might be the cause for not getting your desired result.

Gone through your contacts correctly but still aren’t getting results?

Now at this point let’s say you have gone through your hundreds of warm market contacts, put the numbers in your favor, but still aren’t getting results, or maybe just aren’t at the level you want. It definitely happens, and it happened to me, but at this point you can either throw in the towel and quit, or look in the mirror and see what might be the problem.

It could be your warm market and your credibility with them if you did all the right steps, which is fine, and at that point you can move into cold market and building your business through attraction marketing and lead generation, as well as through new people you meet and future warm market you develop.  It could be your leadership level and that you lack the skills to succeed at the level you want. Finally it could be the business you are marketing and promoting.

Most often it’s the first two in the scenarios described above. If other people are winning at high levels in your business, your work ethic, your personal development, going through the numbers, and time, should be the only things separating you from success.

Not to say that the business you are in might not be the right fit for you, but usually jumping to the “next big thing” is not going to change your results, while looking in the mirror to see what you are doing, who you are, and who you are talking to, is really what makes the difference.

Having the right training and mentor-ship, going through the numbers with warm market and cold market, and setting up a system to attract the right people to you, are really what you need to succeed in almost any business. If you aren’t doing those things, well then you really have no one to blame but yourself and your actions, and shouldn’t be getting sucked into the shiny object syndrome and looking for overnight instant results or playing the blame game on someone other than yourself.
