How to get over fear of talking to people in network marketing

Focus on their interests not yours for how to get over your fear of talking to people

One of the major reasons you have a fear of talking to people is that you are trying to be impressive vs letting the other person be impressive. You might be thinking that you need to be the interesting person in the conversation, when in reality, the person you are talking to should be the person you are focused on.

A great book on people skills, How to win friends and influence people, talks about being interesting vs being interested. This is a huge factor for overcoming your fear of talking to people.

When you are interested, vs being interesting you can shift from being a talker to being a listener. Not only will this ease your fear of talking to people, but it will make them like you more as well.

Ask a lot of questions to overcome your fear of talking to people in network marketing

One of the biggest things I struggled with when I started my network marketing business was how to overcome my fear of talking to people. When I first joined the network marketing industry I was an introverted, socially awkward, video game nerd.

Not the greatest combo for building network marketing success right? Well one of the reasons I had fear of talking to people was that I felt that I had to become the center of attention. That was actually the opposite of what was actually true.

People don’t care about how much you know, they just want to know how much you care.

You can accomplish this by asking more questions. Not only does asking more questions put you in control of the conversation, it also allows you to talk less.

The less you talk, the more you can find out how your network marketing business could help your prospect. Talking less is also one of my favorite things as an introvert haha.

Seriously though, when you talk less and listen more, it can not only help you achieve network marketing success faster, but it will help you overcome your fear of talking to people as well. Just let them do the talking!

Focus on being a friend first and not being in pitch mode when you are prospecting for network marketing

Another way to overcome your fear of talking to people about your home business is to focus on being a friend first and not being in pitch mode. Most people who are struggling with their businesses, are struggling because they are in the mindset of how can I sell this person, vs how can I help this person.

Pitch mode is a how can I sell this person attitude and it can certainly lead to anxiety when talking to people. When you come from a mindset of how can you help someone first, it let’s you focus on building a relationship not just trying to sell someone.

People can smell pitch mode from a mile away and can push them away from your network marketing business immediately. Certainly you’ll want to be excited about your business, but the amazing features of your business isn’t why people join.

They join because of the benefits they receive and what’s in it for them. Your potential customers and business partners justify joining because of the logic and features, but buy on emotions and benefits.

When you focus on being a friend first and just getting to know a person and don’t have to worry about pitching them or going into it with an ulterior motive, it can help reduce your fear of talking to people about your business greatly.

How to get over your fear of talking to people about your business by only offering it to people who are open

Another key tip you can get over anxiety about sharing your network marketing business, is to transition to business only if they are open to it. Similar to pitch mode, too many times, network marketers struggle because they are trying to convince people who aren’t open or interested.

You’ll certainly have a fear of talking to people about your business if you think your job is to convince people who aren’t interested. Imagine you sold meat and you thought it was your job to convince vegetarians to buy from you.

That would certainly cause some stress and social anxiety wouldn’t it? It would be pretty hard to not develop a fear of talking to people if you were forced to convince people. So stop trying to pitch people who have no interest and are completely against what you offer.

Unfortunately that’s exactly what most network marketers are doing. So instead of trying to convince those who aren’t a fit. Focus on those who are.

Are you are talking to people and asking probing questions? As you do you’ll start to hear areas in their life that they are dissatisfied with. Many of those areas can be solved by your network marketing business. If they can, you have a perfect opportunity to invite them to take a look.

At this point you shouldn’t have a fear of talking to people about your business. When you know they have a problem you can solve it can get rid of a lot of anxiety. A great transition at this point is, “I couldn’t help but overhear…”

For example you might say, “I couldn’t help but overhear, when we were chatting earlier you mentioned being frustrated at your job. I’m just curious have you ever considered doing something else outside of that at all?”

Another tip that can help you get over the fear of talking to people about your business – Worse Case Scenario

One thing that helped me get over my fear of talking to people about my business was considering what would be the worst case scenario. In almost every scenario the worst thing that can happen is just a not interested.

With the worst thing that can happen is someone saying no to your opportunity or no to buying your products, is it that terrible?  Is a no going to kill you? Obviously it won’t.

Often, the story we create than our heads about what could happen, is far worse than anything that ever would.  When you invite correctly, you don’t have to worry about offending someone or ruining a relationship either.

Finding out if someone is open first and then simply sharing your business with them is the way to go. If they are open it will eliminate any type of negative outcome. Even if someone says no, you’ve at least planted the seed where they know about what you do.

Even with a no, ask for a referral

Often when you get a no it really just means not now, rather than not ever. So if you planted a seed with someone is at least a chance they might get started down the road.

On top of that you can always ask for a referral. Certainly not everyone will be a fit for your business,  but everyone does know someone that could be a good fit.

I have friends that are million-dollar earners in their company and they were first introduced to the industry because someone asked for a referral.

The person that initially saw it said no, but their sponsor, asked if they knew anyone else that could be a good fit. This lead to signing up a future million dollar earner, through a no!

You never really know who knows somebody that could be your next rock-star. So even a no could turn into a massive result in your business.

If you don’t talk to them, someone else will

Something else you should really consider is that if you don’t talk to someone, somebody else will.  I’ve I’ve been on both the receiving end as well as the giving end of this scenario.

Basically this means that if you don’t talk to someone you know about your business, there’s a high potential they could hear about it from a competitor. They may even hear about a different business and join that instead.

The worst thing about this is they may even join an inferior company or business.  So not only did you miss out, but so does the person you know.

I’ve had scenarios where I ended up talking to a person that joined my business instead of a close friend of theirs. That new rep joined my team instead of theirs, only because I shared it with them first.

The crazy thing is, the person who joined was cold market and a stranger to me, but had known our mutual friend for over 15 years!

The flip side is I’ve also had this happen to me. Several years back I had a co-worker come up to me and ask if I was in ___ company because they had just joined and seen some of my pictures.  Not a fun conversation when I could have shared the business with them instead.

So if you’re scared to talk to someone about your business, always keep in mind they may get started with someone else if you don’t share it with them.
