Well in this post you’ll learn how to respond to someone asking you “what do you do for a living?” and to have them wanting to learn more.
Is your response to “what do you do for a living”?” pushing people away or doing nothing?
One thing that network marketers tend to struggle with when they are talking about their business is attracting people to them. Most people in network marketing and the home business industry do it wrong.
Most people actually repel people from them when it comes to how to respond when someone asks what you do for a living. Many network marketers try and be way over the top or do nothing at all to attract people to them.
So many times you’ll run into people saying stuff that is so far out there it’s annoying. You’ll hear things like “I help people break through their limiting barriers and achieve the life of their dreams!”
Or maybe it’s something like, “I have the most amazing cleanse product in the world people are dropping 60 pounds in two weeks, and it’s transforming lives!”
Worse yet they often just say, “I’m a network marketer.” or “I’m a network marketing professional.” or “I’m a rep with xyz company.” These responses are so overused and you sound like a robot and create no curiosity.
When your response to what is it you do for a living is so over the top, or so bland that it creates no curiosity, it hurts you.
Phrases that attract people to you as a response to “what do you do for a living?”
So what are some phrases that attract people as a response to what do you do for a living? Well there are a couple things to focus on.
The first thing to understand when it comes to how to respond when someone asks you what do you do for a living is to talk about how you help people. Think of your typical response to this if you were to work a regular job.
Most people would say something like, “I’m a teacher.” or “I’m a nurse.” or “I’m a lawyer.” Great professions, but those responses create a “so what” feeling or response in someone’s mind.
The only real reason someone would dive deeper from that is to make conversation or to be polite. Those sort of responses don’t actually create curiosity or pull people in.
The format you want to use for responding to what is it you do for a living is something that creates a desire to know more. So for example you would want to speak to someone’s pain points or benefits of your business or product.
Speaking of benefits or pain points for what do you do best answer response
The best format and what do you do best answer response needs to be in the form of how do you help people. People don’t care what you do, when it comes to network marketing, they care how can you help them.
So when it comes to how to respond when someone asks what you do for a living in network marketing it needs to speak to pain points or how you help them. When your what do you do for a living answers are in this format it can arouse curiosity to learn more.
For example a great format is “I help people ___ without ___” So an example of this what do you do best answer would be something like, “I help people lose weight faster without spending hours in the gym or massive dieting.”
In this instance if you sold a nutrition or weight loss product for your network marketing business, don’t you think that someone who had that problem or wanted that benefit would want to know more? Of course they would.
Another great format for how to respond when someone asks what you do for a living is to say “you know how ___? Well what I do is___”
With this format you can talk about a problem that people you help suffer with, and then how you provide that solution. Let’s say for example your business helps people make more money.
Your “what do you do best answer” could be something like, “You know how most people are looking to create a safety net to prepare for retirement with this shaky economy? Well what I do is help people build a stable second income around their schedules without getting a second job.”
What if they are already in network marketing?
Another stumbling block network marketers have is what to say when you run into other people who are already in a home business or network marketing. Here’s one of the best network marketing success secrets…you don’t try and pitch them on your business!
So often network marketers try and hype up their business to other network marketers to try and get them to jump ship. This just gets into a battle of who’s company is better and it wastes everyone’s time.
Your job isn’t to convince people who are happy in their business to quit and join yours. If you are doing this, you are putting a bad name on the industry and pushing people away from you.
As a business owner, your job is to provide value and solutions to people’s problem. Not to convince them they have a problem that you need to fix!
If someone is happy in their current business, that’s awesome! Be happy for them that they found something they are excited about.
From that point simply see if there is anything else you can help them with. Maybe you can help them generate leads for their business or perhaps you have a recruiting course for sale that could benefit them.
Always focus on how can you help people as your what do you do best answer and how to respond when someone asks what do you do for a living.
