Be empathetic

In the professional world it’s important to leave home problems away from work, sometimes in life things happen that will cause your staff members to suffer at work too.

At times like these, it’s important to be empathetic to their situation. Imagine losing a loved one and not having any empathy or support within the workplace – it would be horrible right? Showing your staff that you care will help them recover faster and also gain their respect.

People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.  So if you’re looking to keep morale up treat people as a person not just a number.  being empathetic with your employees and team can help you do this.

One thing I neglected for a long time while building my business in organization was,  focus too much on business only. when you combine developing relationships with your team as well as business the team will grow much faster and stick around longer.

A great book on this concept that really helped with the growth of my business was The 5 Levels Of Leadership by John C. Maxwell. This book really opened my eyes to a new way of leadership, and I highly recommend it as a must read book. You can check out the current price over on Amazon here.

Know where they are

If some of your employees aren’t always on site, it can be difficult to keep track of their safety. Delivery drivers, for example, are on the go pretty much constantly and if something happens to them, you will want to know about it.

Using telematics within your fleets will help you keep track of where they are and also help them avoid any accidents on the road.

Provide refreshments as a way how to take care of your staff

When you’ve got a long shift ahead of you, there’s nothing worse than the thought of not being able to refresh yourself with a drink or a snack at break time.

Providing coffee and vending machines will allow your staff to hydrate and rejuvenate. Not only will this put you in their good books, but it will also promote harder working staff members!

This is a great way how to make employees feel valued. You don’t have to provide 3 course meals everyday to your team, but a few dollars on coffee a month can really increase productivity and moral.

The last thing you want is for your employees or team to dread putting in the work everyday.

Create a staff handbook

Miscommunication and accidents can come from not knowing what you should be doing, and that’s why it’s important to create a staff handbook that’s available at all times for them to look at. It should outline rules and regulations you expect them to follow as well as a detailed guide on all roles so that if anyone is absent, all roles can still be filled.

The same time nothing can be more frustrating to your team and leading by policy and procedures alone.  having a company handbook is certainly something you should do, I remember you’re dealing with people not just a set of rules.

so make sure you use your company handbook as more of a resource for your team rather than overly criticizing them what the rules contained within.  I remember a long time ago with one position I had where the Company handbook talked about things like logos on pants.

while rules like these certainly have a place what’s in your  business, they can sometimes become a priority vs tasks that actually matter to the bottom line of your business.

Create your company handbook but also remember to lead your team not just rule over them with policies.

Insist on regular training

Finally, it’s your responsibility as the boss to provide training for your staff members, and also to ensure that all training is up to date.

Even courses that might not be essential should be offered to your staff so that not only are they safe in the workplace, but they can also excel at what they are doing.

Personal development is a huge part of building a successful team and business. If your organization isn’t growing they are dying.  There are many ways to implement personal development within your organization.

One of the fastest ways to start improving your team’s results is with either reading personal development books, or with audio books. If you’d like to learn more about some of the top personal development books I recommend, I’d suggest you check out this post.

If audio books are more your style you might consider checking out an Audible membership. It’s one of the fastest ways to go through leadership development training and you can do it while doing other things. Learn more about getting a membership HERE.

Another strategy for how to make employees feel valued is with incentive programs

One of my favorite sayings is celebrate what you want to duplicate.  Too many times business owners managers only focus on and negative reinforcement.

Certainly that can be one aspect to your leadership strategy, however you’re really looking for a way how to make employees feel valued, you may consider positive reinforcement is a better alternative.

A great strategy for this is through incentive programs for your team and staff.  People will work for a living but they will die for recognition.

This is why setting up incentive programs as a strategy motivate your team works so well.  There are many ways to help motivate your team. However, leading with “carrot”, often works better than with a “stick.”

Another cool thing about setting up incentive programs for your team, is you can cater it to each specific department improve productivity.  With the mindset of “celebrate what you want to duplicate” in mind, you’ll base incentive programs around top income-producing activities you want to have happen.

How to structure an incentive program without costing your business a fortune

One concept to really understand when it comes to incentive programs in your business, is that you can’t overspend compared to the prophets you bring in. Again the idea is to increase profits for your business through these programs.

Make your rewards congruent with what your team is doing.  For example you wouldn’t want to give away an all-expense-paid trip,  for each person that brings in one new sale for the month. Unless that sale was worth thousands of dollars to your company and it more than paid for the promotion.

maybe you giveaway company merchandise as prizes you know it was that hit the goals you’ve set.  this can be a great way to spread the word on your company, Withings like t-shirts, mugs, hats, or other merchandise you may have with your business logo.

I recently just got back from a cruise and they had different contest and events going on and the prize or menu was just plastic gold boat.  certainly not an amazing prize but it definitely had people motivated to win and get that reward and recognition.

You can apply the same principle with building your business and making your employees feel valued, with incentive programs and recognition.
