Nutritional Consumer Trends to Embrace and Profit From

Increasing numbers of us are deciding to set up our own small businesses and become our own bosses. This is understandable. There are so many benefits that come hand in hand with working in this way. It allows you to keep your own schedule. You can choose where you work from. You can keep all of the profit that you work hard to acquire.

But perhaps most importantly, you get to choose exactly which field you specialize in. You can choose what you want to sell to the consumer market and how you want to go about bringing it to them.

Many business options to choose from

Now, many budding small business owners are choosing to head into fashion. This is understandable. People are willing to fork out a whole lot of money for a new line of t-shirts, a uniquely designed jacket, or some stand out shoes.

But remember that other markets do exist. A great market to consider is nutrition. After all, we all need to eat and consumers are taking scientific research under their wings and actively deciding to focus more on the quality of food and sustenance that they provide their bodies with. I had worked in a nutrition business for many years in the past and know the difference it can really make for people.

In order to stand out from the crowd, you’re going to have to choose a relatively niche area and focus on it. Here are just a couple for you to take into consideration!

Starting a nutrition business in supplements

Supplements is a great market to consider. So, let’s take a moment to understand what supplements are and why people are likely to hand over their money in exchange for them!

What Are Dietary Supplements?

In an ideal world, we’d be able to gather all of the vitamins, minerals, botanicals, herbals, enzymes, and amino acids that our bodies require to function through our day to day diets.

Of course, there’s a food out there to tick every box of our nutritional requirements and, technically, we would be able to consume these as parts of our breakfast, lunch, and evening meals. However, we live in the real world and the majority of us don’t have the time, disposable income, or sheer will to ensure that we get everything we need as part of what we eat.

This is where dietary supplements come to the rescue. Dietary supplements are products that are intended for consumers to ingest. They contain key ingredients that ensure we get all of the aforementioned vitamins and other substances and that our bodies can reach peak performance as a result.

They can come in a variety of forms. From tablets to capsules, drinks, gelcaps, energy bars, powders, and soft gels. You could provide these to the consumer market!

Doing Your Research

As with any business venture, you should start out with a little market research. Determine what consumers want from their supplements. This will help you to determine what area holds demand and consequently what are you should be dealing in.

Once you have any idea of the type of supplements you want to provide, you will have to work alongside scientific and nutritional researches, who will be able to let you know what your supplements need to contain to provide consumers with what they want.

Manufacturing

Once you know what you want to provide consumers with, a manufacturing process will help to bring your ideas to life. Work hand in hand with professional nutritional supplement manufacturers. They will guide you through the entire process, from consultation to final product.

Testing

All products should be put through rigorous testing to ensure that they are safe for human consumption and also to ensure that they do what you claim they do.

Your final products should successfully meet the rules and regulations placed down by the FDA in their Federal Regulation of Dietary Supplements. Not only will this guarantee the well-being of consumers you engage with, but you will also be able to put FDA approval on your packaging, allowing people to see that you are a legitimate and reputable supplier.

Labeling

All dietary supplements need to be clearly labelled. You should give information regarding ingredients that the supplements contain, as well as concentration and the amount of active ingredients per recommended serving.

Make sure to also list ingredients used solely for the purpose of binding, flavoring, or filling. This will allow consumers to make an informed decision about whether they want to try your product out or not.

Vegan Products

Another nutritional trend to embrace and work with is veganism. Veganism is on the rise and it is estimated that the number of vegans has tripled in the past decade alone. This newly emerging market could prove beneficial to you in the sense that there’s a whole lot of demand and relatively little competition.

Sure, major chains may be cottoning onto this relatively untapped market, but they tend to be offering one or two vegan options to test the waters. If you are able to offer variety and choice in an extensive range, you could seriously be onto something good! So, let’s take a moment to learn a little more about veganism and the vegan market!

What Is Veganism?

While this term is thrown around a lot, some of us are still unaware of what veganism actually is. So, let’s keep the description short and sweet. Veganism is a lifestyle choice that excludes the use of animal products. Vegans do not eat, wear, or otherwise use animals and animal products. In terms of nutrition, this means no:

  • Meat
  • Eggs
  • Dairy
  • Honey
  • Gelatin

Alongside any other form of animal products.

Why Are More People Turning Vegan?

So, what has sparked interest in this lifestyle choice, consequently creating demand for vegan products? Well, the majority of vegans eliminate animal products from their lives for one (or multiple) of three reasons: for animals, for the environment, or for their health.

  • For the animals – when it comes down to it, animals are sentient creatures and killing them in any manner is cruel. The environments that many animals are kept in during the lead up to their slaughter also tends to be inhumane. They can be packed into tiny environments with little to no personal space, they are fed low quality food, and they often go through processes such as castration, branding, tagging, declawing, and debeaking without anesthetic.
  • For the environment – meat and dairy production takes its toll on the environment. Livestock create extremely high levels of methane through their gas and feces. A whole lot of land is also cleared in order to be able to farm livestock and to grow crops to feed the livestock that we then consume. This habitat destruction could be minimized by cutting out the middle creature and consuming the crops that currently feed livestock instead. A whole lot of fuel is also used in the process of shipping animals to slaughterhouses, corpses to butchers, and meat to suppliers.
  • For their health – of course, not every meat eater is unhealthy and not every vegan is the picture of health. But studies and reports have shown that a vegan diet encourages you to cut out saturated fats and many foods with high levels of salt. It also encourages you to fill up your plate with healthier plant-based matter.

Setting up a vegan friendly business could make you a whole lot of money at the same time as helping animals, benefiting the environment, and improving the general health and well being of those who buy from you! It’s an altogether ethically sound choice!

These are just two different nutritional trends that have burgeoning markets that you really should consider catering to if you’re planning on setting up a small business in he nutrition space! You could make a whole lot of profit in the process.

Pick a business and start generating leads for it

Once you decide on a business to start, be sure to focus on developing a lead generation strategy. Too many times people struggle with their nutrition businesses because they don’t have enough quality leads to talk to.

The foundation to this with a nutrition business is to create a lead magnet to give away for free in exchange for a name email and phone number. A lot of nutrition businesses will give out free samples to try and drum up new business, but there are some downsides to that strategy.

Depending on how you promote it and who you are targeting with your samples, you may just be wasting your money. I’ll include a video below of some more effective promotion strategies concerning giving away free samples.

Develop a free lead magnet for your nutrition business vs just free samples

That being said creating a lead magnet that is congruent with a nutrition business or health and wellness is pretty simple. A common pain point in this industry is for weight loss. So you could create a free ebook or PDF guide on “10 workouts to lose weight fast.” or “10 foods to avoid that are sabotaging your weight loss.”

Then once someone has opted-in to get that guide you can then offer your sample, or even sell them a sample or trial of your product. This strategy can save you sending samples to the wrong people, and even earn income by giving out samples. I’d recommend this kind of strategy if you are marketing a nutrition type business.
