Why Choosing Unpaid Work Could Be Your Best Decision Ever
Take a moment to imagine your dream job or dream business. Have you got that image in your head? Great.
Now, imagine I have offered you your dream job or dream business. It’s everything you want and more, and you can start right now. The catch is that it’s unpaid or it might even take a few years to start making a significant income. Would you take it?
Well, unpaid work or an internship could get you there faster than you think.
Unpaid Work Could Be A Short Term Sacrifice For A Long Term Gain
I’m willing to bet that your heart just sank into your socks, but it really shouldn’t have. Between your rent and bills, life is expensive and it seems like a lot and I get that. The idea of taking on work that doesn’t pay you dime doesn’t sound like a good idea, but it could be the best thing that you could do for yourself today.
Think about it: you could get a paid part-time job around your current one, but the situation isn’t what you want and won’t offer you the experience that is going to further your career and future learning. The unpaid work? That’s the work that is going to have more overall value to you, in the long run, is the one that’s not going to pay you initially.
There are paid internships and paid work out there in your field, but these are usually very rare, elite positions to take. It’s so hard to get on board a paid internship, but the time you put into unpaid work is so much more than time wasted. It’s proving that you’re committed to your chosen industry.
It’s proof that you want the experience to show that you are willing to learn in a new job. You get so much back from unpaid work than you’d expect, and when you’re studying a specific degree at a college like the University of Arizona, you need to be able to graduate with some experience under your belt! Even though you’re not paid, you’re going to benefit, and there are so many ways you can do so.
It Looks Good On Your Resume
Building a strong resume is not always easy, especially if you are in college right now. Graduates always find it hard to write a resume as there isn’t much to put on one just yet.
With internships and volunteer work, you have something to say about your experience, and employers look for strong resumes. The more extra-curriculars you have and the more internships you have, the stronger your resume looks.
Having a degree is great, but actual experience can be looked upon just as favorably. If you are looking to work with a company or start your own business, having experience is crucial.
Plus with some actual work experience under your belt, you’re more likely to get something in your given career.
You Will Be Behind If You Don’t Have Experience From An Internship Or Real World Work
Do you have any idea how many college students are clamoring for positions in a company? All of them is the right answer!
With internships becoming available with businesses, you’re already behind if you’re not taking one on. Some people are just as educated as you looking for positions in the same field, which means that you’re going to be behind if you’re not applying for internships as early as possible.
Gaining The Right Experience
You may still need to decide if your major is the right one, and an unpaid volunteer job in the area in which you are interested can really be everything that you need to help you decide if it’s really the right industry for you.
Your internship will tell you whether the industry you’ve been looking at is the one you should be in, or whether you should change your major early! Completing one internship over your college years should mean you’re excited to finish school and really accomplish something.
If you are looking to start a business in a specific field find a mentor and leader in the field and work for them. You may even have to work for free for a bit, but if you can assist them while learning the ropes from someone successful you can go out and do the exact same thing.
This could dramatically cut down on your learning curve starting your own business.
Rubbing Shoulders
Networking opportunities in companies in which you can intern are very high on the agenda if you are looking for an internship. You can meet new people, forge new connections, and gain some essential skills while you’re at it.
You’ll be able to learn who’s who in the arena in which you want to work, and you can gain some valuable insight into your possible pathway in the working world. When you meet new people, stay in touch the best you can because you may well need them to help you to get to the next stage of your college plan.
Company Benefits Are Something You May Get Along Side Of Unpaid Work
You may not be getting cash payments, but the other benefits of working an internship can include things like travel costs and even bonuses for food in the workplace. There will always be something to keep you motivated!
You Could Get A Job Or Lead To Your Next Business
The unpaid internship that you go onto could lead you into a paid work position. There could be a paid job waiting for you if you impress the right people, and it would be down to the unpaid work that got you there!
If you’re working for an entrepreneur the things you can learn could be invaluable and could end up saving you years of time learning, and even thousands of dollars from avoiding costly mistakes.
