Leadership

Even Business Leaders Need Guidance

Becoming boss of your own company doesn’t mean that you no longer have to listen to other people. In fact, the best leaders are often the best listeners – they collect information from other people and they allow this to help influence their decision making. Here are just a few ways to make use of other people’s guidance as a business owner.

Take courses to develop your leadership

Taking a course could allow you to develop your business skills. You could consider a leadership course or a business admin course, or you could consider something more niche such as an accounting course if you feel this is a particular weakness. A course doesn’t have to be long-term commitment – there are many short courses and day workshops where you can learn new skills.

Hire advisers and other leaders

All business owners can benefit from hiring advisers. These are people who you can call upon to help you run your business. Many people hire financial advisors to help them understand where they could be cutting costs.

Legal advisers meanwhile can help when it comes to understanding business laws, writing contracts and defending against lawsuits. Other advisers you may want to hire now and again include marketing advisers, HR advisers and IT consultants.

Follow influencers and match and model their leadership styles

You’ll find a swathe of business advice online. This can often be free, however you do need to be careful which sources you trust. Try to research into credible influencers – these could be bloggers, vloggers or social media accounts that offer cutting-edge advice.

Many of these influencers will have a specialism such as HR influencers. Make sure to follow their accounts/blogs so that you can keep up with their content.

Learn from your customers

Customer research is an essential way to improve your business. By handing out surveys and feedback forms, you can allow your customers to recommend changes. Not all criticism will be useful, but some of it will be.

Learn from your competitors

You can also learn new ways to run your business by keeping tabs on your competitors. Whilst you don’t want to copy ideas from rival businesses, you may be able to take influence from them.

For example, you could borrow the idea for a successful product or a sales strategy and put your own unique spin on it. You may also be able to learn from your competitors failures and come up with a solution faster than they do.

Learn from your employees

Your employees may also be able to teach you something new. In fact, some of the best employers deliberately hire applicants that can bring something new to the business.

By holding meetings with your employees and allowing them to suggest improvements, you may discover ideas you hadn’t considered. At the same time, your employees will feel valued and are likely to be more loyal and hardworking as they feel more involved in the company.
