10 Skills of Network Marketing to Become a Top Earner Fast

These days a lot of people are looking to work from home, and start their own home business. Network marketing can be a great option for people who want to build a part-time income from home. Those who take it very seriously can even turn their part-time business into a full-time income. Certainly this doesn’t happen overnight, and you need to master the basics of network marketing first. Thankfully, there aren’t that many new skills you need to learn to become successful in network marketing. In today’s post, you’ll learn the top 7 skills of network marketing you need to master to become a top earner.

  2. Lead generation
  3. Inviting
  4. Presenting
  5. Closing
  6. Using a 3-way call with an expert
  7. Edification
  8. Followup
  9. Getting new team members started correctly
  10. Promoting company events and training

Prospecting in network marketing

Prospecting in network marketing is really one of the most basic skills of network marketing you need to learn. Early in my network marketing career, one of the biggest challenges I faced was feeling like I had run out of people to talk to about my business.

A lot of people end up feeling like this. Typically you start your network marketing business by making a list of your top prospects and then reach out to them about your business. While I certainly recommend this as well, most companies never tell you why to do this.

The reason is that when it comes to warm market vs cold market, your warm market list already has a built-in relationship with you. All things being equal, those who know, like, and trust you, are more likely to do business with you vs a complete stranger.

Prospecting your warm list is pretty simple, but the skill of prospecting in network marketing goes beyond that. You need to learn how to find your ideal customers and prospect them to see if they would be interested and open to your business or products.

Lead generation skills for network marketing

Active prospecting is a highly effective strategy to grow your network marketing business. With a little hustle, you can have a steady flow of people to talk to about your business.

Active prospecting is great, but it does eat up a lot of time. The good news is that when you master the skill of prospecting, you know where to target your marketing efforts.

One of the other skills of network marketing you want to master is passive lead generation. The network marketing skill of prospecting can allow you to build a new list of people even in a place where you don’t know anyone.

When you master lead generation, you will actually have a steady flow of targeted leads coming to you, vs you having to hunt down prospects. A passive lead generation strategy takes longer to develop, but it can work to grow your business 24/7.

This is powerful, especially if you are building your network marketing business part-time. Instead of having to spend all of your time prospecting, you can spend it on presenting and closing new people and customers into your business.

Spend your off hours developing a lead generation system for your network marketing business and set up a network marketing sales funnel, to work in the background while you focus on other income-producing activities.

Inviting prospects to check out your network marketing business

Inviting is possibly the number one skill in network marketing you need to master to become a top earner fast. Unfortunately, this is the network marketing skill most people never learn and why most people fail in network marketing.

Instead of learning how to invite professionally most people just verbally vomit on people. They try and explain every detail about their business before someone actually sees a presentation.

Curiosity is what moves people, and you need to build curiosity when you invite in network marketing. Certainly, you don’t want to mislead people about what your business is, you just want them to see the presentation for what it really is.

Most people get the inviting process wrong. They think that their job is to convince someone that they have to join or buy their products no matter what.

The reality is, you are just looking for people who you can actually help with your products and services. You need to shift your mindset from “how can I sell someone on my business?” to “how can I help someone with my business?”

The best way to do this is to find a pain point, problem, or desire that your network marketing business can solve in someone’s life. When you determine what that issue is, you can easily invite people to check out your business without being pushy, awkward, or needy.

An example of how to invite prospects to check out your network marketing business

Let’s say I knew someone wanted to stay at home with their kids and have flexibility working from home. An effective invite might sound something like, “Hey Tom, I remember you telling me that you were frustrated that you had to work so many hours and felt like you were missing your kids grow up. It may or may not be for you, but I’m just curious, if I could show you a way to spend more time with your kids and be able to work from home, would you be open to checking it out?”

The key is finding a problem, need, or desire that you found out about why learning about your prospect, and then presenting your business as the next logical step to fix that problem. If someone says they are open, you simply transition to your sales presentation.

You might say something like, “Great, well I’d be happy to clear up some time and go over the details with you and see if it looks like a fit for you. What’s your schedule like this week and I can run through everything? I know I could do something tomorrow evening or the day after if either of those would work for you in the next few days?”

If they weren’t open, you simply wouldn’t present, no big deal. Timing may not be right for them, and you can always check back with another pain point or problem down the road and see if they are open at that time. Presenting your business, products, or services

Presenting is another one of the essential skills of network marketing you want to master to become successful. Thankfully presenting your business is probably one of the easier skills to learn.

Most network marketing companies have a video presentation that you are able to use to present your business. I would suggest watching the video yourself several times to learn how to do the presentation on your own as well. Doing this will give you the ability to present your business anytime and in anyplace.

Another option is to invite your prospects to a live event or a zoom call that another leader in your organization is doing. This can be helpful because you can learn the presentation from someone else, you have social proof of other people succeeding in the business, and you don’t have to be the one presenting.

You can also do 2 on 1s  with your sponsor and they can do the presentation for you while you are learning the ropes. This can be done via Zoom as well so you don’t actually have to be there in person with your expert or even your prospect.

If you don’t have a presentation you can use, I’d recommend doing a basic presentation reviewing your products and the benefits and then a brief overview of how the compensation plan works for your company. If you can, also use success stories and testimonials to cover common objections you often hear from prospects after the presentation.

Doing this can help you overcome objections before they even happen in your presentation.

Closing in network marketing

Closing is another essential skill of network marketing, and much of it is centered around overcoming objections and building belief. There are 3 main beliefs that you need to establish with your presentation and while closing in network marketing. The beliefs of “is it real?”, “can I do this?”, and “will you help me succeed?”

Typically the objections you get after a presentation are centered around these 3 beliefs. For most network marketing companies it really only takes a few hundred dollars at most to get started. The average person spends that kind of money every single month, so when people give you the objection that they have no money, it’s really not true.

They either don’t see the value in your products or don’t believe that they can do it or that your business is real. If they did have that belief that they could succeed, there wouldn’t be any question that they should invest a few hundred dollars to be able to build a profitable business part-time.

How to isolate the objection while closing in network marketing

When it comes to closing in network marketing, you first need to isolate the objection. This means that you confirm that it is the real objection. You could do this by saying something like, “If I’m understanding you correctly, you love everything and it makes sense for you to get started, but it’s just the money holding you back? So if you could figure out the money to get started, you would be ready to do this or is there something else holding you back?”

Often times, people struggle with closing in network marketing because they are trying to handle objections that aren’t the real objection. Once you know what the true objection is, you can try and handle it yourself, or also use a 3rd party expert to help you close.

Using a 3-way call and 3rd party expert to assist with closing in network marketing

Learning to use a 3-way call in network marketing is another one of the tops skills in network marketing you want to master. Using a 3-way call may seem like a skill you only use in the beginning of building your network marketing business, but it’s something you’ll use your whole career.

You’ve probably heard the old saying that a profit isn’t welcome in their own home town. This concept especially holds true in network marketing.

Using a 3-way call in network marketing can help you build the 3 beliefs of network marketing you need to get people started. For starters, it can answer the question of “is it real?” Often you’ll be presenting your network marketing business in a one on one fashion or maybe with just a video. The person may be your warm market, or they may be a stranger.

If you are the only person they have encountered doing the business, it can raise some skepticism. However, when you use a 3-way call with another leader in your network marketing business, they can see other people are doing it. This builds credibility for your business, provides social proof and helps prove it’s real.

A 3-way call also helps answer the questions of “can I do this?” and “will you help me?” When you use a 3-way call, a person can see all you did was present the information and introduce an expert. Most people will feel that they can do this. Also, they see that a team of people are available to help them succeed, which answers “will you help me?”

Edification in network marketing

This next essential skill in network marketing is knowing how to edify a business partner. The basics of edification are that you talk highly about someone and speak to what success they have had and who they are as a person.

I was first taught that a simple edification formula is to use two facts and an attribute about someone. For example, “Meet Tom, he has earned his car bonus with the company and is on track to hit one of the top ranks in our local market. He is also super down to earth and really cares about his team and I can’t wait for you to meet him.”

Edification doesn’t need to only be about business success either. You can follow that same formula for a product testimony as well.

The main benefit of using edification and a 3rd party expert to help you grow your network marketing business is that the information is coming from someone else. If you are dealing with warm market you might not have credibility or influence with that person.

You have trust and a relationship with them, but no credibility. When you edify someone it builds up their credibility and your prospect uses that and the trust with you to make a decision.

Also, edification goes both ways. Your 3rd party expert can edify you back and say nice things about you, and that can help build your credibility as well. The video below explains this concept of edification in more detail and how to develop that network marketing skill.

Scripts to set up a 3-way call and edify an expert

A tip I’ve found that works best when using a 3-way call is to tell your prospect you will introduce them to another leader in the organization after the presentation before the presentation starts. One of the hardest parts of using a 3-way call in network marketing is that it can be awkward if not properly set up.

A solution to this is using a simple script that I’ve found to work incredibly well. This script can help you with promoting your business, closing, and even selling your products. You just simply switch up a couple of words depending on the situation.

For example, before a presentation, you could say something like, “Hey Sam, as I mentioned I have a way for you to be able to eventually get out of that job you hate and retire early. It may or may not be for you, but I have a quick video that runs through the details. Also, afterward, I’d love to introduce you to my friend Sally. She heads up expansion in our organization and she can answer any questions you might have after the video.”

Then after the presentation, the transition to your 3-way call and edifying your expert is simple. You could say something like, “Well Sam, as I mentioned before I’d love to introduce you to Sally. She’s been working with this idea for about 6 years, and with this concept has been able to replace her full-time income and is now able to have total time and money freedom. She did it part-time around working her full-time job and has now been able to transition to doing this instead. I told her about you earlier and she’s excited to meet you.  Give me one second and I’ll get her on the phone.”

Followup if someone isn’t yet a yes or a no

The fortune is in the followup. Share on X

Obviously we would all like for people to make a decision immediately after the presentation. While typically that is when people are either going to join or not, you can still make a lot of sales after that first presentation.

This skill of network marketing is important because knowing how to followup appropriately can help you maintain relationships. Most people go into “begging mode” or “stalker mode” if someone doesn’t say yes right away.

This is not what you want to do. You want to be a professional and you need to learn how to accept a no if that is what people want. The key is to keep inviting people to learn more information and get their questions answered if they continue to express interest.

For example, if someone wanted to “think about it” that’s great. As a method of followup, you can first clarify that it isn’t just their polite way of saying no. If they are still interested but want to think it over, invite them to another type of exposure.

You might have done a one on one presentation as your initial exposure. Well, the next step could be a 3-way call with a leader in your organization to hear their story and to answer any questions your prospect may have. Don’t resort to high pressure or harassing people, simply lead your prospect to the next exposure until they give you a yes or a no.

Building an automated followup system with email marketing

Another strategy of followup is to develop an email marketing automated followup system. Automated network marketing recruiting is possible with this kind of email marketing strategy.

However, you still need to follow the same principles of in-person follow-up. You can’t set up an email marketing system to spam your leads and prospects and hope that they will sign up. This is the same as being in “begging mode” or “stalker mode.”

You can however set up an email series that continually leads people into that next step in your sales process without being spammy. You can ask someone if they want to join your newsletter list to get tips and training on how to build a successful home business after your presentation.

In this email series that goes out to this list, it should educate your lead on the further benefits of joining your business and the products you offer. Then at the end of the email, you could have a call to action with something like, “Ready to get started with your home business or have more questions? Click here to book a call with me!”

Then that could go to a calendar app to schedule a call or you could even just list your email address or phone number to book a call with you. Check out the video below to learn more about setting up a passive income business model like this.

Getting new team members trained and started right

One essential to building a large network marketing business is helping others succeed and building a team. Network marketing duplication starts with getting your new team members started correctly.

Duplication is one of the toughest skills of network marketing, and it starts with getting your new team members off to a fast start. One of the biggest reasons people quit network marketing is that they get their feelings hurt and they aren’t prepared for rejection.

Most people when they just get started getting caught up in what is possible when you become a top earner in network marketing. Unfortunately, they don’t realize this doesn’t come easy and get caught off guard when someone says no.

You need to train your new team members that success in network marketing is a numbers game. Educate them on the law of averages and that not everyone you show will get started and that’s ok, and you can still be successful without them.

Inviting is one of the most important skills in network marketing, and this needs to be something you teach new team members right away. The reason many people get rejected in the beginning and get their feelings hurt is that they aren’t inviting correctly. Teach your team members about that and the other skills in this post to help them be prepared.

Promoting company events and training

The final skill you want to know to become a network marketing master is promoting. Most often you’ll be promoting company events and training events to your new team members or potential team members.

However, promoting is something you’ll use in almost every aspect of your business. The reality is that if you want a large team in network marketing you need an organization that isn’t dependent on you.

The only way this can happen is if you have a system in place to train and build your team with or without you. One of the best ways to do this is by having your team members attend company events.

At company training events people can see a bigger perspective and can learn from other top earners in network marketing. This is great because some people you recruit will be better than you in the business. This is a good thing!

You want people in your organization to grow and develop into leaders and in order for that to happen, they have to want to go to these big events. This is where the skill of promoting comes into play. You need to be able to promote effectively or your team won’t get trained and see the bigger picture.

If your team isn’t trained, they won’t get results, and their belief will be low. This slows or even stops duplication in your organization. So learn how to promote effectively as it’s one of the top skills in network marketing.

Conclusion

The reality is to master network marketing, really only takes a few skills and applying them consistently in your business. Understand that becoming a top earner in network marketing takes time and there is a learning curve involved.

The good news is, that once you develop the skills of network marketing success you have them forever. Your network marketing business will have ups and downs like anything else, but if you are consistent and apply the right skills, you can eventually reach your goals.

Dedicate time to master these 10 network marketing skills and you will be well on your way to becoming a leader in network marketing.
